Assam situation worsens, toll hits 40

Not even the full force of military and the state machinery vigilance could restrict the Assam violence as the ethnic war remained unabated after Wednesday. The inferno had only spread to more areas in the Kokrajhar and Chirang districs. 8 more people were found dead in these districts.

The conflicts between the Bodos and the rising minority Muslims had reached a new high, killing 40 people today and the counts still rising. This has been the larges ever of the hegiras that had been witnessed in Assam. There are over 1.7 lakh residents from 400 villages in the districts of Kokhrajahar, Chirang and Dhubri who are now seeking refuge in 128 camps after they lost their shelters.

The Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, had scheduled a visit to Kokhrajhar on Thursday and has asked the people to stop panicking as the situation is getting under control.

The railway services of the Northeast Frontier Railway had resumed the suspended trains, with the Rajhdhani Express which was stranded midway due to violence.

Lt Col Poghat had said that the army had worked efficiently in bringing the situation under control no new deaths were observed. Sanitation of the areas has also been done.

There has been a shortage of trucks due to the migrations of the people to Dhubri and other places in West Bengal had increased greatly with the count crossing 1 lakh. 35 of the Muslim villages are completely empty and the government is expected to provide security to them.

Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohilary's demand for deployment of security forces in the border between BTC area and Dhubri to has worried the Muslim community.
