30-day jail term to Indian American student

An Indian American in the United States Dharun Ravi was jailed for 30 days by New Jersey Judge on the charges of spying on his gay roommate kissing another man on webcam. The roommate Tyler Cementi allegedly jumped off George Washington bridge and died after the spying incident came to light in 2010. Ravi was charged, not over death of Cementi, but for invading the privacy.

The Judge who sentenced Ravi for 30 days in prison has said the he won’t recommend Ravi for de-porting. Meanwhile, when the judge was ready to announce the quantum of punishment, Ravi and his mother broke into tears. Ravi’s mother also delivered an emotional plea. The judge has said that Ravi cannot expunge the pain caused to the victim.   (Phani)
