Bridge to be built across Vasishta Gowtami

bridgeThe much awaited road bridge across the Vasishta Gowtami, a branch of the river Godavari connecting East and West Godavari districts will be a reality soon. The bridge which was on the cards for several years, will connect Sakhinetipalli in East to Narasapuram in West as government issued GO No. 319 in the third week of April calling for fresh tenders and cancelling works entrusted to Maytas Infra in April 2008. This time, clearance for the project is expected under the BOT scheme as government wants speedy execution of the project.

Construction of the bridge was proposed more than three decades ago as a large number of people cross every day between the two districts. The Telugu Desam government in the late nineties made an attempt to take up the activity but somehow this did not materialise. Later, in 2008 April, tenders were finalised in favour of Maytas Infra as a joint venture with another private concern and the then chief minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, laid the foundation stone the same month. The bridge was proposed for a distance of 380 metres at a cost of Rs 90 crore then. There was severe criticism about cost approval on the grounds that the proposed cost was more than the actual cost of the project. The project was not executed.

A three-member committee of retired chief engineers was appointed by government, a report was submitted with some modifications and a new bridge proposed for a distance of 500 metres instead of the earlier one.
