Tropical Cyclone Evans: underestimated catastrophe

In what is believed to be the biggest cyclone to have affected Fiji in 20 years, Tropical Cyclone Evans made landfall today with winds gusting at about 200kmph. It has wrecked houses, bridges and many places have lost power.

People have already been evacuated to over 60 relief centers and the government has already warned the people of the calamity while asking them to stay indoors at all times. Only last week, the storm had killed four when it hit Samoa while several houses were destroyed in the capital town Apia.

The cyclone was classified as a category 4 cyclone with winds of speeds over 250kmph followed by rains and probably floods too and it is expected to move to the northwestern side of the main Fiji islands of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu.

Public Servants were given a holiday in lieu of the natural calamity as declared by the Prime Minister of Fiji Frank Bainimarama. Hospitals and health centres have been closed for all but emergency patients.

"I cannot stress enough how serious this is. Every Fijian will be affected but we must take preventative steps now," Bainimarama said.

Banks will remain closed and all the airlines have been canceled leaving over 2000 visitors stranded in the nation.

It has been receiving support from Australia and New Zealand for search and rescue operations to tackle with the damages inflicted upon the nation.
