Rahul backs Lok Pal calls for more reformsCongress general secretary and MP Mr Rahul Gandhi said today Lok Pal institution alone could not eliminate corruption from the body politic and called for a set of comprehensive laws to ensure Government funding of elections, transparency in public procurement and regulation of sectors like land allotments and mining.

Participating in the debate over the Lok Pal issue, Rahul Gandhi also advocated steps to have a proper grievance redress mechanisms in public service delivery of old age pensions and ration cards and continued tax reforms to avoid tax evasion.

Observing that an effective Lok Pal Act is only one element in the legal framework to combat corruption, he called on the Government to explore the ways of making the Lok Pal institution accountable to the Parliament.

“Why not fortify the Lok Pal by making it a Constitutional body accountable to Parliament like the Election Commission of India? I feel the time has come for us to seriously consider this idea,” said Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi also made a fervent appeal to all political parties and the Government to think of bringing in fresh blood into politics and into the House. “Democracy should be moved deeper and deeper into our villages and our cities,” he said.
