Tidal waves lash coastal AP as Govt goes into safety mode

The people of the coastal areas of AP became panicky today after the weather officials warned that the severe depression formed in the Bay of Bengal would develop into a cyclonic storm and cross the coast between Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh on December 30.

All the nine coastal districts of the state have already opened their control rooms and have taken precautionary measures to protect people of the low lying areas in the event of the cyclone hitting the coast.
The district collectors have appointed special officers in all coastal mandals to oversee evacuation of people wherever necessary and to minimize loss of lives and property.

Under the impact of the depression and the likely storm called ‘Thane’, tidal waves of 8 to 10 feet occurring at several places have already inundated some coastal villages in Nellore, Prakasam and Srikakulam districts. Fishing boats anchored along the coast were either washed away or damaged in the last 12 hours.

Two fishermen were drowned when their boat capsized in high seas near the coast of Malkipuram in East Godavari district Tuesday evening. Five others fishermen swam to safety. On the other hand, 200 fishermen in Guntur district returned safely to the shores with the help of coast guard last midnight.

The fierce depression, centered about 600 km south east of Chennai, has been slowly moving towards west-northwestwards and is likely to cross the coast in the next 48 hours.

Already, squally winds and heavy rains have been lashing the coastal areas and fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea.

Sea water enters beach road in Kakinada

Due to the high tidal waves, sea water entered the beach road in Kakinada and the main road between Uppada and Kakinada was completely damaged under the impact.

Reports also said the sea had advanced by 70 to 100 ft at several places causing panic to the people. (JUBS)
