The hybrid superstorm Sandy has moved on to the US after it has completely devastated areas of Jamaica, Cuba, Bahamas, Haiti and Dominican Republic. Staggering millions of peoples with the mass destruction, Sandy continues to lash the US mainlands with high speed winds though the rains are thought to have subsided. The water levels are yet to go down and the officials would have a lot of work on their hands to pump out the water that had logged in the subways. The East Coast of the country was affected greatly from Boston to Washington. Flooding and power outages have been a common sight everywhere in the affected areas. The death toll has reached 50 of which at least 18 are from New York. Insurance companies have gone into losses as they had to shell out billions of dollars for the damages caused and the lives lost.

Though the status of the Sandy was stripped down to a superstorm from that of a hurricane, the force of the winds with which it lashed the mainland were akin to that of a hurricane. This is expected to be one of the biggest storms in several generations and is also the first natural in decades which led to the closing down of the wall street. Several areas of New York city and Lower Manhattan remain inundated. The financial markets are at a stand still as they remain closed for another day consecutively.

Over 8 million houses have been deprived of power as the winds have caused several power lines to be cut off. Sandy's winds were so strong that they could reach Ohio. Several thousands of flights were cancelled. Cellphone signals were disrupted too.
