Assam floods death toll reaches 125

The situation of the floods in Assam is depreciating by the minute with large areas of land in the valleys of Brahmaputra and Barak remain inundated. Futher worsening the state of affairs the number of lives claimed by the floods have raised to 125.

The great floods have caused tremendous trouble to over 24 lakh people and would be remembered to be one of the worst floods in the history of Assam. This catastrophe ha caused a large scale devastation of over 4540 villages in Assam which accounts for about 9.35 lakh hectares of land being destroyed.

A few districts have recorded lower than dangerous levels of water flowing, while a few others registered lowering levels. However, a vast majority of the 27 affected districts still have water levels higher than the threshold for danger level.

Kaziranga National Park, a World Heritage site, was also mercilessly affected by the floods killing over 595 animals as of now. 17 Rhinos, 512 Hog Deers, 28 Wild Boars, 15 Sambhars, 10 Swamp deers, 5 porcupines and elephants, 2 pythons and hogbadgers, and 1 buffalo and a jackal were confirmed to be dead.

150 medical teams have been assigned to take care of over 5 lakh people who have been relocated to 630 relief camps, the sources said. The damage incurred to the roadways and the railways which have been devastated completely by the landslides doesn't need a special mention.
