Picking up a coconut that had fallen on the road had cost Rahul Bhattacharya his life. 14 year old On the evening of Saturday, at around 7:30pm, Rahul was coming back home from his tutions while he saw a coconut fall down from the tree of his neighbor Rana Banarjee's orchard. Rana Banarjee heard the loud thud and came outside only to see the boy picking it up.He immediately ran towards rahul and beat him up badly. He also strangulated him.

Rahul was a student of VII class in Mahendra Nath High School in Thakurpra, Naihati. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was deeply saddned by the loss of his only son. Rahul's mother, Kanika, demanded that Rana be sentenced to death for killing a child for merely stealing a coconut. Infuriated local residents attacked the members of Rana's family and set fire to some of his household items.

Buddhadeb worked in the Nadia Jute Mill which was closed. He said “my son was seriously ill after he came come, his throat was visibly swollen and was crying in pain. I had no money for proper treatment as my income was shut off by the mill's closure. A local doctor gave him medicines. His condition was very poor and started getting worse since that night. On Sunday morning, he was admitted in Naihati State General Hospital at 6:30 am where he breather his last”.
Locals of the place said that this was not the first time Rana was accused in a similar case. 4 years ago he killed another youth bludgeoning him to death. However he came out of jain with the influence of politicians and the case of murder was mysteriously closed as an accident. Rana, would be produced to the Barrackpore on Monday.
