Indian prisoner in Pakistan, Surjeet Singh has been released from the prison today after serving a lifer. It may be recalled that Indian national Surjeet was arrested and convicted in 1980s on the charges of privacy. He served lifer at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. The police officials of Pakistan are escorting Surjeet Singh. He would be handed over to Indian officials at the border.
Surjeet was actually awarded capital punishment by the then president Ghulam Ishaq Khan in 1989 under Pakistan Army Act, 1985. His capital punishment was turned to lifer and he served in the prison for more than twenty years.
