Asif Ali Zardari, the President of Pakistan, according to the external affairs minister SM Krishna, has been taking the Sarabjit Singh's death row case very seriously.

In a meeting with the President, Krishna talked about the case of 49 year old Sarabjit on Friday.

"The President has taken it very seriously and he instructed his office to look into the details," Krishna said talking to Indian reporters about the talks.

He also mentioned that they would seek the extradition on humanitarian grounds emphasizing that he had spent over 20 years in jail already. He also urged the government to consider the age of Sarabjit Singh and his health while finalizing their decision.

Earlier Sarabjit was convicted in 1990 after allegedly killing 14 people in a series of bombing. His family however maintains that it was a case of mistaken identity and he was merely a farmer.

His relatives mentioned that Sarabjit had entered Pakistan while he was not sober 90 days after the bombings. The Pakistan People's Party-led government later intervened and Sarabjit's execution was put off indefinitely.

At present he is being lodged at the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore and has sought mercy from the President Zardari in a fresh petition.
