DMK vents anger on Lankan Minister's statement

The DMK Patriach has rushed a fax to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the statement made by the Sri Lankan Minister for Power and Energy, Champika Ranawaka. In his fax the DMK Chief Dr Karunanidhi requested immediate intervention on knowing the pretext and context of the speech which quoted, "threatened that one Mullaivaikal was enough and that no one should try to get hundred more". While his colleagues deny that the Minister had made the statement in a different context. As per the Lankan sources the response was to reason out the uprising statement made by an ethnic Tamil association.

In his speech R Sampanthan, leader of the Sri Lankan Tamil National Alliance (TNA), is to have reportedly said: " We must have unrestricted authority to govern our own land, protect our own people, and develop our own economy, culture and tradition. A meaningful devolution should go beyond the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. If the Sri Lankan state continuously denies this right, we will claim our right under international law to external self determination".

However the DMK veteran who pioneered the cause of the Tamils was perturbed at the utterences and wanted the PM to intervene. Mullaivaikal was the ethinic Tamil dominated segement where nearly many innocent Tamils lost their life to the war waged by the Lankan Government agaisnt the LTTE. It is also said that the LTTE Chief Vellupillai Prabhakaran was dead in a nearby lagoon. In this context the veteran felt it as a veiled threat.  (With inputs from internet-AarKay)
