Pak premier gets reprieve from parliament speaker

The Pakistan Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani has at last got a reprieve from the Pakistan Parliament's Speaker on Thursday, who ruled out that he would not be disqualified in lieu with the Supreme Court verdict. The Speaker Fehmida Mirza announced that it has been decided not to send the disqualification to the Election Commission.

Gilani was issued conviction of contempt by the apex court for refusing to revive graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari. The court had also given him a symbolic sentence of less than a minute on April 26. The Premier has the right to appeal his conviction within 30 days and his lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan is expected to file the appeal on Saturday.

The speaker referred to several earlier references supporting the decision. Incidentally the President enjoyed amnesty in the country and abroad being the main reason for the government being silent on the issue.

However, many law makers pondered over, whether the Speaker could settle the issues of the Premier. While Gilani said he would abide by the Speaker verdict, inspite of opposition demanding his resignation.  (With Inputs from Internet- Aarkay)
