Graeme Smith announces retirement

South African Test captain Graeme Smith has announced he will retire from international cricket after the final Test against Australia in Cape Town. The 33 year old Smith has played 117 Test and 197 ODI for South Africa and has been the most successful captain for the nation. Under his captaincy South Africa have defeated Australia in Australia twice in Test series and this is a big achievement for any nation in the past decade.

“This has been the most difficult decision I have ever had to make in my life. It's a decision that I have been considering since my ankle surgery in April last year. I have a young family to consider, and I felt that retiring at Newlands would be the best way to end it because I have called this place home since I was 18 years-old,” said Smith.

Smith's role in the famous 438 run chase win over Australia in 2006 was also a performance never to be forgotten by any cricketing nation. However, South Africa's hunt for a World Cup is yet to be completed. South Africa's ODI's captain AB de Villiers will lead the Test herafter.
