Brain games can improve memory in schizophrenia patients, finds study

A new app developed by the Britain scientists was found to help in improving the memory of patients with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is one of the most degrading affections, being defined as a long term mental health condition that causes a wide range of psychological symptoms, varying from changes in behaviour through to hallucinations and delusions.

The game, "Wizard", is designed to help so-called episodic memory. The scientists examined 22 patients who played the memory game and who made significantly fewer errors and needed significantly fewer attempts to remember the location of different patterns specific tests.

They also found to improve their scores on the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale, which doctors use to rate the social, occupational and psychological functioning of adults.

“These are promising results and suggest that there may be the potential to use game apps to not only improve a patient’s episodic memory, but also their functioning in activities of daily living”, Peter Jones, another researcher, said in a statement.

The study is published in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.
