Naidu’s constituency is facing acute water shortage due to the unusual temperature rise in Kuppam, Chittoor district. The fall in ground water levels at many places also added to the crisis.
The water shortage is becoming a cause for concern in the constituency. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is representing the Kuppam Assembly constituency since 1989, holding a massive rural belt in the district. The only source of drinking water for the tail-end region is groundwater. Since decades, many villages have been reeling under water crisis. Efforts made by the district administration could never help villages to overcome drinking water crisis.
Even though the rains in November 2015 brought some relief to Kuppam with improvement in ground water levels considerably, it is not sufficient. The groundwater levels generally dip to 1,000 to 1200 feet.
Every summer, authorities pump in additional funds into the constituency to deal with the water crisis. As villages are facing severe water problem, women in many parts of the constituency staged protests.
On Monday, a demonstration demanding water was staged by people belonging to Dalavai Kothapalle hamlet at the mandal office in Kuppam happened. Currently. Kuppam residents are being supplied with water once every three days. This just not enough and is leading to an uneasy situation.
