Apart from the judicial procedures, there are a few emotional procedures held before Yakub was hanged.

Just before the night of his hanging, Yakub was given chicken leg and some rotis for his dinner and Yakub had it unwillingly. After eating those, he asked the police that, at what time, he will be woken up the next day.

The sources say that, “he was woken up around 5 am. After having a bath, Yakub had some tea and was given the Quran to read. After that, he was taken to the medical examination. Knowing that his health condition was good, the officials asked about his last wish if any.

Yakub Memon then said that, he wishes to speak with his daughter Zubeida. The officials allowed him to speak with Zubeida from Nagpur prison’s official landline. However, the conversation he made with his daughter is kept private. 

After that, Nagpur city’s metropolitan magistrate, Judge M.M. Deshpande, and deputy collector Girish Joshi had reached the prison. Deshpande read out the legal citation, where the charges against Yakub and the reason for his hanging, were spelt out.

Yakub was then asked whether he concurs with the judgment or not. But Yakub remained silent, leaving the situations to his fate.

He was then taken to the gallows at 6.55 am. The noose was put around Yakub’s neck, his hands bound behind his back, legs tied. Then at a signal to the hangman, the lever was pulled.

Reacting to the issue, a police official said, “We kept the body undisturbed for 10 minutes, before taking it down. After the medical superintendent pronouncing Yakub to be dead, a post-mortem examination was then conducted, where strangulation and injury to the spinal cord at the neck, was ascertained as the cause of death.”

Yakub Memon relatives reached the prison after Yakub was hanged.

Yakub’s brother, Suleiman, and cousin Usman reached the prison at around 8.15 am. Yakub’s body was then transported to Nagpur airport in an ambulance. The body was taken through the cargo terminal and put on Indigo Airlines flight to Mumbai, which took its start at 10.30 am.

At an age of 53, Yakub might have happily spent with his family, seeing his daughter married and playing with the grandchildren and loving his wife, if he thought for a second before attacking and killing the people.
