In yet another ghastly incident of train crash reported in last one week, 35 passengers were injured when two commuter trains collided head-on in western Switzerland in late afternoon on Monday. One locomotive driver is believed to be absconding.
The collision took place in Granges-pres-Marnand in the canton of Vaud, shortly before 7:00pm, said the regional police.
Five of those injured are believed to be in a critical state, revealed Swiss Federal Railways spokesman Reto Schaerli. They have been rushed to a nearby city hospital in Lausanne. One trapped person is yet to be pulled out of the wreckage.
“The situation could have been much more catastrophic," police spokesman Jean-Christophe Sauterel told Reuters TV.
Rescue operations are on at the site of the accident. Paramedics, firefighters, police and air rescue helicopter have been deployed.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
"At the moment, we don't have any ... information how this collision happened," Schaerli said.
“The trains were on a route between Payerne and Lausanne, a city on the shores of Lake Geneva,” Schaerli said. The crash has interrupted train services between Payerne and Moudon and will remain so until midnight.
The train crash comes in just a few days time after the deadly Spain train crash that killed 79 people early last week.
