Will Indian High Commission give in?

India is in a fix with its involvement in the Maldives diplomacy and the problem has only exacerbated after the magistrate court of Maldives has issued and arrest warrant against its deposed President Mohamed Nasheed who is seeking refuge in Indian High Commission, Male. India is yet to react on the warrant issued on Monday.

It is highly likely that the Indian High Commission will contend the arrest warrant since it wants the liberal Maldivian Democratic Party to take part in the presidential elections in September. The hearing of the case was in Hulhumale magistrate court. Maldivian Foreign Ministry has informed of the arrest warrant issued on Monday which instructed the Maldivian police to produce Nasheed in court.

The High Commissioner only said that the Indian Ministry of External Affairs is looking into the issue and that they are positive that Maldives cannot make such a move according to international conventions. DM Mulay, the Indian High Commissioner said, "Anyway we are firm on our stand that the Maldivian election should be inclusiveā€¯, talking to a popular Indian news daily.

Nasheed sought the shelter at Indian High Commission last Wednesday after he feared an arrest. The arrest is in all likeliness a mere ploy to stop him for contesting for the President. Nasheed was deposed and ousted one year ago after protests and the rebellion by police after Judge Adbulla Mohamed was arrested on charges of corruption.
