500 Refugees in relief camps missing

It was noted that Dhubri, the relief camps had as many as 500 people missing from the camps in Assam. It has been suspected that these people might have fled to Bangladesh  after authorities started verifying antecedents of the victims of recent clashes between Bodos and immigrant Muslims.

The oficials mentioend that the intelligence agencies had confirmed the details. They had also checked their identity documents and land records before they were allowed to the rehabilitation sites.

They mentioed that it was due to the fear of being identified without any proof of Indian nationality at the camps, that they fled from the camps back to Bangladesh.

Initial rumors announced that there had been several thousands missing but the investigations revealed that only 500 were missing.


Adter the Assam violence triggered by the ethnic clashes between the Bodos and the Muslims in the Bodo dominated areas led to the displacement ov over two lakh people who had taken refuge in over 215 refuge camps organized in Assam.

Meanwhile, in order to deal with the growing demand for detection of illegal immigrants, Assam government has asked the Union Home Ministry to allow setting up of 64 additional tribunals to identify any foreigners.
