A young woman, Bhupinderjit Kaur, 22, had been killed by her father Makhan Singh, after her marriage against the family's decision with Manjinder Singh. The father along with an accomplice had killed the girl in Hoshiarpur, the police said.
Hailing from Dhiangarh village, Bhupinderjit was madly in love with Manjinder Singh who performed as a folk singer hailing from Salempur village for the past five years, the SSP Balkar Singh Sadhu of Hoshiarpur said.
The girl's family had not entertained the relationship as they belonged to Ramgarhia community but the couple had married at a Gurdwara less than a year ago. Eight months into their marriage, the daughter was killed in what is suspected to be a honor killing.
On 12th July Makhan with his friend Harcharan Singh had set Kaur on fire after drenching her in kerosene. Kaur suffered severe burns and was killed on the spot.
Later, SHO, Mehtiana, Sukhpal Singh had accepted a bribe of Rs 7.80 lakh to whitewash the case while letting Makhan Singh free instead of registering a case.
DSP Chabbewal who later investigated the case and reported to the police ordering them to arrest both the accused.
The SHO was booked for his crime after a case was registered against him.
