For the last 60 years, Beijing had never witnessed such heavy rainstorms killing over 37 people. Other parts of China also had heavy rains that killed several dozens.
It is highly unusual that Beijing a relatively dry region in China had rains that had stranded the traffic and trapped people in water that was waist-deep. Over 25 people drowned, 6 people were killed in houses that collapsed, the power lines had electrocuted 5 people and one was killed by lightning.
Globe Times had reported that this was the heaviest rainfall in 61 years. The southwest of the city, Fangshan had the highest rainfall with 460 mm of rain fall on Saturday. Pinggu district had sudden rains that reached over 100.3 mm in a short span of an hour.
There were flash floods in Xinhua, that stranded over 100 students of primary school and 9 teachers. They were later transferred to safer places.
4 deaths were recorded in Shanxi province after the truck they were traveling in was swept in the river that was flooded by the river.
The condition now is back to normal with the sunny skies returning to the city. The airport has also started running like normal after several flights for the weekend were canceled while few others were delayed.
