A girl in her 11th class was publicly molested outside a city bad in Guwahati by as many as 20 people on Monday. This shameless scene lasted for more than 30 minutes till the police arrived at the scene and rescued her. She was later handed over to the house but the culprits were not arrested that day.
Government and Police ignored the incident until they were forced by a video shot by 2 local news channel reporter and posted it on YouTube. This coerced them into making arrests. After 48 hours of the ghastly incident, only 4 of the 20 person mob were taken into custody. The others still are free as birds.
This atrocious act was the cause of a great outrage all over the country. Sushma Swaraj, BJP leader, on her twitter said, “We will not let this go unpunished”. Bijoya Chakravarty, MP from Guwahati had spoken to the Director General of Police on Thursday.
The police of the city claim that 11 members in the group have been identified and they would make definite progress arresting them within a week. They would concentrate on chargesheeting then rather than merely making an arrest. 3 arrested people have already been charged for trying to outrage the modesty of a girl.
