BSP supremo and former Chief Minister of UP Mayawati let out a sigh of relief after the Supreme Court denied the CBI probe against her regarding the case of disproportionate assets on Friday. The SC also retracted CBI from starting a probe against her without the orders of the Court.
The CBI shouldnt have lodged any FIR int the first place without the direction fo the court. SC said “ We are satisfied no directions to conduct a probe were issued against Mayawati in the case of disportionate assets between 1995 and 2003. CBI failed to understand and act according to our directives. The subject of the investigation was not to go beyond the Taj Corridor scam. No findings or material reports againt Mayawati in the DA case .
Justice P Sathasivam, heading the bench, stated that “the probe was to be initiated agains all state government officials in the scam and there was hardly any necessity that required an exclusive FIR on Mayawati's assets which are allegedly disproportionate to the known sources of her income”.
Mayawati' Laywer and confidante Satish Mishra speculated that the CBI could have started the probe nine years ago with pressure from BJP. In defense Mayawati filed a petition in May 2008 asking the court to reject the proceedings against her in the DA case alleging that it was merely political vendetta.
CBI argued that it had ample evidence that she had wealth that doesnt tally with the income she is officially sanctioned. Mayawati refused the claim by saying that they were donations from party workers. CBI also rejected that the DA case should be closed after her assets are evaluated by income tax department as it believed there to be some kind of a “criminal nexus” which could have been the reason for amassing huge sums.
