PWD prepares to handle excess water due to Thane

Cyclone Thane was likely to move westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu coast between Nagapattinam and Chennai, close to Puducherry early tomorrow morning.

The Public Works Department (PWD), proposed to release excess waters in the reservoirs, anticipating continuous showers from Thane, as announced by the meteorological department, today. The PWD said at Chennai that it would be releasing surplus waters from Red Hills, Chembarambakkam and Poondi Reservoirs.

An official release said, in view of the prediction of heavy rains, the PWD Department depending on the intensity of the rainfall, would start releasing surplus waters from these Reservoirs, if required. ''The release of water will be calibrated depending on the inflows into the reservoirs and will vary from 250 cusecs to 2000 cusecs,'' the press release said, adding, people living in the surplus course and low lying areas of these reservoirs were advised to move to safer places. Meanwhile, the PWD has formed 20 special teams headed by Superintendent Engineers to monitor the water level in the reservoirs and take necessary steps in the coastal districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore and Villuppuram. A special control room was also opened at the PWD office to enable the public to contact in the event of any emergency.
