Is it normal to lose weight during pregnancy?

They say that pregnancy is directly proportional to weight gain. Well, if you are pregnant and losing weight fast instead of piling on any, worry not. To lose weight during pregnancy is as normal as gaining weight during this time. It just varies from woman to woman. Here’s what you need to know.

Dr Kiran Coelho, Mumbai-based obstetrician and gynecologist reveals, “Women gain anywhere between 7 to 11 kilos from the 20th to 36th week during their pregnancy. Some women lose weight in the first trimester due to nausea and loss of appetite. Between 12th to the 20th week, her weight is usually static. Thereafter she starts gaining half kilo every week till the 36th week. Then her weight remains constant till delivery.”

Weight loss is common during first trimester, blame it on morning sickness and loss of appetite. If this is the case with you too, check with your doctor on your baby’s growth. If the growth is normal, then lay your worries to rest.

However, if weight loss continues into the second trimester and you have been dieting, it’s time to take care of your pregnant body rather than maintaining the waistline.

Dr Hemant cautions, “Do not diet to lose weight during pregnancy. Diet should consist of everything that is nourishing for you and the baby. It is NOT OK to DIET and lose weight during pregnancy.”

The only parameter to determine whether weight loss is healthy or not is keep a tab on the growth of your developing baby. As long as your baby is growing, this small stuff doesn't really need to be sweat over.
