Oestrogen may be linked to the risk of Dementia in Women:- A new study that is conducted by the George Institute for Global Health told that the life events that influence the levels of hormone oestrogen in women is linked to develop Dementia in their later stages of life. All these findings are published in the journal PLoS Medicine. Some of the reproductive events like early start of menstruation, early hysterectomy and menopause are directly linked to high risk of dementia. The chances are high during pregnancy or abortion. The risk of dementia is also observed in children and men apart from women. Jessica Gong, the lead author from George Institute for Global Health told that it appeared in reproductive events and women are at a higher risk for dementia.

The risk of dementia increases with age and it is mostly seen in women as they live longer. Dementia is now turning out to be a global epidemic and is impacting 50 million people across the globe. It is expected to get tripled by 2050. Estradiol is the predominant form of estrogen during the reproductive life and estriol is found during pregnancy. Oral contraceptives during reproductive years, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can have an impact on the oestrogen levels. The George Institute for Global Health conducted a research on 2,73,240 women without dementia who are registered with UK Biobank. The study told that they were associated with an increased risk of dementia.
