In its second transparency report, Facebook has revealed that India made the highest requests for restricting content, followed by Turkey [2014], Pakistan [162], Israel [113], Germany [84] and France [80] in the second half of 2013. Over 4,765 pieces of content was censored by Facebook on the request of government authorities.
Most of these content restriction is reported by law enforcement officials and the India Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) under local laws prohibiting criticism of a religion or the state, said Facebook. According to Google's transparency report, content removal requests in India have grown by 90 per cent from July – December 2013. Sri Lanka stood last which made only three requests.
India ranks second in the world, in terms of the total Facebook accounts with 100 million users while US stands first with 182 million users.
