A stringent warning has been given to Sahara Chief Subrata Roy, by the Supreme Court today.
The SC warned him that he will have to return to jail, if he fails to deposit Rs 2,052.22 crores by July 15. According to a leading news channel, the Sahara Chief, who was present in court claimed the judges that he would furnish two cheques for the same amount.
The judges in response to his statement, said, “We are warning you - if the cheques are not realized, we will send you to Tihar Jail directly from court.” The Sahara Chief also promised in the SC to deposit Rs 1,500 crore in Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI)-Sahara account on or before June 15. Subrata furnished a post-dated cheque of Rs 552.22 crore to be realised by July 15.
The SC, however, subsequently extended his parole till June 19, and directed him to be present in the court on that date. The apex court also rejected the request made by his lawyer, Kapil Sibal, for reconsideration of the auction Sahara’s lavish, Amby Valley, near Lonavala. The property is estimated to be around Rs 34,000 crore. The SC is also trying to recover Rs 24,000 crore from Sahara. The amount that was collected through a savings deposit scheme. It was declared illegal by market regulator SEBI later. By far, the conglomerate has paid Rs 12,000 crore and has missed several deadlines to pay the remaining amount. The apex court repeatedly told Sahara to deposit Rs 5,000 crore immediately, of which Rs 2,550 crore, must be paid now by June 15.
