Former Cuba President Fidel Castro Dies at 90

Former President of Cuba, Fidel Castro, died at age 90 in Havana. He had led a rebel army to win in Cuba. He also adopted Soviet-style communism and opposed the power of 10 US presidents during his half-century rule.

Fidel Castro also governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976. He was born in Birán, son of a wealthy farmer.

Fidel Castro's brother announced the demise on national television. "The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening," the president announced.

"I'll be 90 years old soon," Castro said at an April 2016 communist party congress where he made his most extensive public appearance in years.

"Soon I'll be like all the others. The time will come for all of us, but the ideas of the Cuban Communists will remain as proof that on this planet if one works with fervor and dignity, they can produce the material and cultural goods that human beings need and that need to be fought for without ever giving up."
