Vodafone India Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director Marten Pieters opined that it is extremely difficult to do business in India due to delay in government clearances. Pieters at the Economist India Summit in New Delhi had his words to say and added that this difficulty is in every business not just in Telecom field. He also said the telecom industry in India is in a mess. “The telecom industry, if you look at it from international perspective, is a mess in India ... And it seems to come from this concept which has been developed in the past that the more competition, the better,” he said.
So to make process easy, Pieter said by removing few impediments and fast action in clearances, things may get comfortable for foreign investors. Vodafone has taxation issues with Indian government and it has been slapped with Rs 20,000 crore retrospective capital gains tax.
Though this amount is a huge one, Vodafone said it will continue to provide its service.
