Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan collects 50,000 signatures against triple talaq

The Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) has started a campaign to seek abolishing of triple talaq in India and collected 50,000 signatures in support of the demand. The organisation has approached the National Commission for Women (NCW) urging it to back the campaign.

“A national signature campaign is underway in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, MP, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Kerala, UP etc. So far, 50,000 signatures have been collected where women and men have endorsed abolition of triple talaq. Many more signatures would be collected in the coming days,” said BMMA convenor Noorjehan Safia Niaz.

“Muslim women are entitled to their Constitutional rights and any practice or law that is violative of the Constitutional principles of justice and equality must be abolished. Just as with other communities Muslim women want to reform the personal law in practice currently and bring it on par with the Constitutional and Quranic principles of gender justice,” stated the BMMA letter to NCW chief Dr Lalitha Kumaramangalam.

The women's rights group said, "We have found that women want a legal ban on the practice of oral/unilateral divorce. Our national study 'Seeking Justice Within Family' found that 92 percent of Muslim women want an end to this practice which destroys their life and the lives of their children. Coupled with oral divorce is the heinous practice of nikah halala which also must be abolished.”

Former Press Council of India chairman and Supreme Court of India judge Markandey Katju tweeted: “Where are the Mullahs ? Are they not going to do something against these heretics?”

"I am strongly against oral talaq and burqa among Muslims, and I support the demand of a uniform civil code," Katju wrote on his official Facebook page.

Conservative clerics have opposed the move saying oral talaq is part of “divine laws”, which cannot be changed.
