No jobs, visas for drunken driving convicts!

Those caught in the drunken driving cases, would now may lose the opportunity of getting the government jobs and also visas for the overseas employment.

Speaking on the issue, Hyderabad police commissioner M Mahender Reddy said, “I have given instructions to the special branch to verify the conviction data of drunken driving offenders and traffic case offenders during background verification work and report the same to employers.”

City courts, according to the Supreme Court’s directions, have been awarding punishments ranging from "till the rising of court" to over 3 months in drunken driving cases.

In that sense, not just to the drunken driving case, similar punishments were being meted out to offenders, who committed other violations like signal jumping, rash driving and wrong side driving, and also to those who did not cleared e-challans, even after receiving warrants.

Elaborating on the drunken driving cases new ruling, special branch inspector general, Y Nagi Reddy, said that, less than two years jail term will not restrict one to get a passport, if a drunken driving convict fails to mention his jail term in the passport application, he would be charged for 'perjury'.

"From the crime database we can see details of an applicant's criminal history, including his or her DD case convictions. If a passport applicant, who is convicted in a DD case, fails to declare it in the application, he or she will be booked for perjury and may not get a passport.”

Especially in the countries like US, driving under the alcohol influence is a serious offense and so the convicts might not get visas for employment there.

“The consulates and embassies of certain countries have access to visa applicants' crime details,” a top police official said.

Cyberabad police is even verifying the drunken driving conviction details, during employee antecedent check.

On the other side, not just for men, the issue is strict even for women, who found offended in drunken driving case. Since 2011, only 62 women have been caught in these cases.

This could be due to lack of sufficient women cops in the enforcement wing. To  address the issue, police will now include two women police personnel with DD teams conducting checks, especially at Panjagutta, Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills areas.

Reportedly, the enforcement teams are aware of days on which day, the pubs hold its 'ladies' night' and accordingly places personnel to nab offenders.
