US Court dismisses Devyani case

A New York court on Wednesday dismissed criminal charges against Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade who was charged with visa fraud and making false statements about a domestic worker.

US District Judge Shira Scheindlin in Manhattan accepted Devyani's motion to dismiss the indictment on the ground of diplomatic immunity and also terminated Devyani's bail conditions and open arrest warrants based on the indictment must be thrown out. Devyani's lawyer Arshack welcomed the judge's decision.

Devyani was arrested on December 12th charges of visa fraud and making false statements against her in connection with the employment of her housekeeper Sangeeta Richard. Devyani was also subjected to strip search and cavity check, was released on bail with an assurance of $250,000. Ever since then the diplomatic relations between India and US weren't fruitful.

India demanded an unconditional apology however US never did so. Devyani left for India on January 9, under the protection of diplomatic immunity within hours of her indictment in the United Nations.
