10 persons were killed and more than 70 injured, some of them seriously, when three powerful blasts rocked the Mumbai city this evening, police said. The blasts took place in busy and crowded markets around 7 pm, according to reports.
The police and relief teams have rushed the injured persons to the JJ and KEM hospitals.
As a result of the explosions, the cities of Hyderabad and Delhi were put on high alert and the Centre is sending a planeload of BSF Jawans to Mumbai for additional security measures.
NTDV, quoting police officials, said that the blasts took place at Zaveri Bazar,Opera House and Dadar in Central Mumbai. Union Home Ministry decribed the explosions as terrorist attacks.
Senior officials of the Union Home Ministry, who asserted the explosions were caused by the terrorists, said improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were used for triggering the blasts.
Police sources said the nature and intensity of the blasts was not yet known. Senior police officials and ATS teams have rushed to the spot.
Police said that the first explosion occurred near the market at the most famous Mumbadevi temple in Zaveri Bazaar. Several jewellery shops were located there.
The second explosion reportedly took place in a parked taxi in Dadar area while the third blast was reported from Opera House in Charni Road. More details of the blasts are yet to pour in.a
