Yacob Memon, 1993 Mumbai blasts convict to be hanged on 30th July

The 53-year-old convict, Yakub Memon may be hanged as the result of a TADA (Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act)  court warrant to carry out the sentence. He is scheduled to be executed on 30 July at 7 am in the Nagpur Central Jail. Memon has moved a petition in the Supreme Court hoping to stay the execution. On 10 April, the Supreme Court had rejected a petition filed by Memon seeking to stay the death sentence. The mercy plea of Memon had also been rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee on 21 May, 2014.

"Yakub could be hanged in the Nagpur jail or in Pune's Yerwada jail," said Nagpur Jail superintendent Yogesh Desai. Memon 's health has already been put on monitoring and so far it doesn't reveal any kind of physical or mental stress.

Memon is a former chartered accountant and the brother of the prime accused in the case, Tiger Memon. The blasts had claimed 257 lives and left 713 injured. CBI had alleged that the conspiracy was hatched by Dawood Ibrahim and other absconding persons, including Yakub's brother Tiger Memon, who is believed to be hiding in Pakistan. Officially Yakub Memon was arrested on the morning of 5th August 1994, from the New Delhi railway station, far away from Pakistan or Dubai where the Memon family was said to be in hiding.

Rahil Memon, Yakub’s brother-in-law said, “Yakub is going to be hanged. I am aware of people talking about it. But it is not true. We are still hopeful that he will be released.” “Yakub has always been a calm and caring person. And it is exactly how he has been in the jail,” said Rahil. Rahil takes along with him Yakub’s daughter to meet him every alternate month. She has recently graduated with a first class, Rahil says proudly. Whatever the verdict might be, Rahil sees Yakub as his idol.

Yakub Memon was accused of having funded the training of 15 youths who were sent to Pakistan for training in the use of arms and ammunition and funding the escape of the family following the blasts.
