At least 17 persons were killed in a fatal road accident in Punjab this morning.  The accident took place at around 2 AM on Monday when the jeep in which they were travelling collided with a truck killing 14 persons on the spot.  The remaining persons were rushed to a nearby hospital in Moga where they succumbed to injuries.

The victims were returning from a shrine in Nanaksar and the accident took place on Ludhiana-Ferozpur highway. The police who reached the spot have said that the accident occurred only due to the reckless driving of the truck driver who allegedly tried to overtake another vehicle and subsequently collided with the jeep. The victims included five women and five children. Reportedly all of them from one family. The police who booked the case have said that the truck driver fled the scene. (Phani)
