Centre denies to give opinion on Ramasethu

The Union Government on Thursday denied to give its opinion on the petition requesting the Court for declaring Ramasethu (also known as Adam’s bridge) as the cultural heritage site. The Centre has said the court to take the decision on the same.

It may be recalled that BJP leader, Subramanya Swamy has filed a petition with the Supreme Court stating that the proposed idea for construction of bridge in Ramasethu should be quashed besides urging that the site should be identified as culturally heritage. In his petition, Subramanya Swamy has said that Ramasethu is linked with the sentiments of crores of people.

The Supreme Court asked the opinion of the Centre over the same and the Government denied to give its opinion and asked the Court to take the final decision. Therefore, the Supreme Court deferred the next hearing to the third week of August.

It has to be mentioned here that the famous epic of Hindus, Ramayana written by Sage Valmiki mentions about Ramasethu, the man-made bridge that enabled epic hero Rama to approach Lanka (today’s Sri Lanka) along with monkeys’ battalion  to kill the villain Ravana and set free his wife Seetha.

Notably, several scientific reports indicated that Ramasethu was not a natural bridge and was a man-made one.(phani)
