Powerful quake rocks Central Chile

The U.S. Geological Survey said today that a powerful earthquake of 7.1 magnitude rocked the central parts of Chile on Sunday.

In a statement in Washington, the agency said there are no immediate reports of loss of life or property. However, some reports said house roofs were damaged in many areas of Central Chile.

A powerful quake hit the country two years ago causing severe loss of life and property. Thousands of people left the coastal areas after the 2010 quake.

Following the quake, the communication system of the country has collapsed totally. Officials said that the quake had forced most of the citizens out of their homes. “Power and water supply systems too were partially disrupted in several areas,” authorities said.

As the effect of the quake was also felt in Santiago, thousands of football fans left the stands of Monumental Stadium in frenzy during the Colo Colo-Palestino match of the Chilean championship. (J)
