A group of transgender people submitted a petition to the Chennai City Police Commissionerate on Friday. The petition sought permission to indulge in flesh trade till they find alternate livelihood for survival. A pathetic struggle by the less fortunate souls is worth a moment of your precious time.
Talking to reporters after handing over a petition, popular transgender Rose, who had anchored some programmes on Tamil TV and featured in FM programmes and had even campaigned in Assembly polls, said there were about 50,000 transgender in the city. She said except one or two like her, who have risen to a good position in the society, more than 90 per cent of them, who were deserted by their families, were solely dependent on flesh trade for their livelihood.
Rose, who was accompanied by about 25 transgender, said they were subjected to harassment by the police while they were roaming on the roads during night time. 'At times had been arrested on frivolous and false complaints', she lamented. The Tamil Nadu government should come forward to provide alternate source of employment to transgender by giving them educational and vocational training. 'Since this will take time, the police should allow transgender indulging in flesh trade' till then, Rose said. (With inputs from internet: AarKay)
