Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan today announced that the government has proposed to build temporary homes for the survivors of last month’s devastating earthquake and tsunami with a budget of $50 billion.
The March 11 earthquake and tsunami had destroyed roads, ports, farms and homes and crippled the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The worst ever natural disaster forced tens of thousands of people out of their houses.
Around 30,000 people are dead because of the natural disaster and nearly 1, 35,000 survivors are being accommodated in 2,500 shelters set up in schools. And yet many others are staying with relatives and at temporary houses.
The prime minister said the total damage from the natural disaster was estimated to be $309 billion, making it the world’s most expensive natural disaster.
