Rules to stay young June 07, 2014 17:39

Someone has rightly said, "You're as young as you fee." Youth has little do with age and more to do with how you live. While it's impossible to hold back the years, you can erase all signs of ageing from your life by altering your attitude to something more positive and living each day with vigor, passion and love. We share with you some expert rules to stay young at heart always. Follow these. Forget the nonessential numbers like age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. After all, that's why you pay them. Hang out in cheerful company. Avoid the grouches and friends who pull you down. Keep learning. Learn a new thing everyday. Never keep the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's. Cherish the simple things of life. Laugh  often, laugh long and loud. Keep smiling. Don't stop the tears. Shed, grieve, and move on. Get over all loss. Be ALIVE while you live. Surround yourself with everything you love be it family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies,  etc. Love your health: If it is good, maintain it. If it is bad, improve it. If it is beyond improvement, get help. Never take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the sweet shop, even to the next city or a foreign country, but never take guilt trips. Love everybody from the heart and don't forget to express it. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. How lucky is Buddha for your home? January 31, 2014 17:07

Regarded as a lucky charm, the 'Budai' or 'Laughing Buddha' as he is commonly called as, is perhaps one of the most adored and adorned Feng Shui symbols in most homes. But it would be wrong to mistake the cheerful Buddha with Lord Buddha, who showed the humankind its ways to 'Nirvana'. A symbol of happiness and contentment, the wandering, cheerful monk, with a a large protruding stomach, wearing a robe, and carrying sackcloth is often portrayed seated on a cart drawn by boys, or holding an oogi (a wish giving fan). Japanes refer to him as Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods and the patron of poor children. Buddhist traditions believe him to be Maitreya, the future Buddha.  According to legend, if one rubs the Laughing Buddha's great belly, it brings forth wealth, good luck, and prosperity. Confusion Budai is often confused for the Buddha in West. But in reality, the Chinese name Budai has no connection with the Sanskrit word, Buddha. Trivia The 'Laughing Buddha' as Hotei is also said to be the patron saint of restaurateurs and fortunetellers. Charm quotient The 'Laughing Buddha' is popular as a house-warming gift. It is best to be gifted one, than buying it, should be kept on an elevated surface facing the main door, and never on the floor. (AW: Suchorita Choudhury)

Care for your pet pooch January 08, 2014 18:07

Who doesn't like pets - but loving them is one thing and keeping them at home is quite another. Pets, like human, demand affection and attention as well as training and exercise. If you don't train your pets well, they are likely to get annoying and ill-behaved. Here is what you can do to minimize your pet worries.  Exercising Remember, your pet needs a good deal of exercise everyday to get rid of his excessive energy. Whenever you take him out to litter, allow him to run and have fun. "This is the only way to release his excessive energy which if not released could make him irritable. It amounts to building stress which will be exhibited through excessive barking and unwanted pouncing," says Delhi-based senior veterinarian, Dr James Rappai.    Never raise voice Never raise your voice on your pet. Make him comply to your commands by saying like you mean it rather than barking orders. "Be careful about the commands and the words you use. Don't confuse them. If you use the command 'Sit' to make him sit, do not use 'Heel' instead," says Chennai based dog trainer J Rangarajan.   Pay attention Some pets need more attention than others. They will bark every time they are hungry, happy or playful. Don't snub them. Says Pet groomer Geetika Nigam, "This habit must be modified simply by not providing positive reinforcement when he is barking for no reason."   (AW: Suchorita Dutta Choudhury)
