The first semi final is to be played at Bangalore today between New South Wales v Royal Challengers Bangalore. But the cricket crazy Chennai denizens are going to have a party here on Saturday. Mumbai Indians will play Somerset in what will be the second semi-final of the Champions League T20 2011, at the Chepauk stadium at Chennai, on Saturday.
Interestingly, both sides come into the game with two wins, one abandoned game and a loss. Mumbai Indians began the tournament with two wins, over Chennai and Trinidad and Tobago. Then, their game against the Cobras was rained off before they went down to the New South Wales Blues. On the other hand, the Somerset side defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders and had their game against the South Australian Redbacks abandoned. A heavy loss to Bangalore pegged their chances back but they did well to defeat the Warriors in their last game and make it to the semi-finals.
Mumbai's most dangerous batsman is thought to be Australian star Aiden Blizzard, and Blizzard is on offer to top score for them. Blizzard's opening partner Sarul Kanwar is also thought to be a potent force, and can be backed to hit the most runs. And of course West Indian sensation Kieron Pollard, who made 58 in a rained off game against Cape Cobras, is available for the crisis situation. The Somerset side has been really bolstered by the presence of Craig Kieswetter and Ros Buttler, not to mention the hard-hitting capabilities of Roelof van der Merwe. How they bowl at the Mumbai Indians will go a long way in deciding the winner.
Coach Shaun Pollock was brimming with confidence about the forthcoming semifinal. He said Bhajji is the kind of person who thrives on responsibility, whether it is as a captain or on the field. If you give him the ball in a pressure situation, I think that's when he performs best. And right now despite the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar absence, he is still managing the team very well.
About the Somerset captain and compatriot Alfonso Thomas who has taken seven wickets with his seam-up bowling so far, Pollock said I think he understands the surface he is playing on and uses the slower ball to good effect. On a wicket that holds, that is very effective. He understands he has the ability to work yorkers. I think he is an all-round T20 player now.
Somerset will go into the game as favourites but a lot will also depend on how well they adjust to the slow pitch. Following 17 days of high drama, thrills, spills, unlikely heroes and exciting finishes, just four teams remain in the Champions League Twenty20 - Mumbai Indians, New South Wales, Somerset and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Here were preview the semi-finals.
