Another On-field collision worries English Cricket

For 40 terrifying minutes on Sunday, English cricket held its breath after a sickening collision between two Surrey fielders.

The crowd of 8,500 at Arundel were left stunned after Moises Henriques and Rory Burns were knocked unconscious after running into each other at high speed going for the same catch.

Henriques suffered a broken jaw, Burns cuts to his head and eye. It needed three ambulances to tend to them and both were given oxygen and put on intravenous drips.

Surrey CCC posted an update on Twitter Monday saying: 'Latest news on the two boys..Both Rory and Moises are in decent shape following their operations overnight..further updates later in the day.'

Australian all-rounder Henriques had been backpedalling from backward point with Burns running in from the boundary at high speed during the 19th over of the T20 Blast game against Sussex.

Both players were looking into the sky at the ball and didn't see the other one coming. Henriques was struck by his team-mate's knee before both fell face down, with medical staff from each clubs quickly out onto the pitch who were soon joined by an off-duty doctor who had been watching the match

Once they collided, Burns lay motionless, with thoughts inevitably drifting to the tragic death of Australia batsman Phil Hughes in Sydney seven months ago.

For the father of 24-year-old Burns, who was watching from the stands, it must have been terrifying.

One piece of misinformation circulating was that Henriques was receiving CPR. Thankfully, rumour was quickly replaced by the sight of Henriques and Burns both sitting upright and giving the thumbs up as they were lifted into ambulances and taken to nearby St Richard's Hospital in Chichester.

Henriques, signed as an overseas player by Surrey for the T20 Blast, found that he had broken his jaw in three places on Sunday.

Burns was said to be in good spirits after seeing a specialist. Both are expected to make full recoveries.

Sussex physiotherapist Jon Marrale, one of the first people on the scene, said: 'Both were unconscious. Henriques was caught by Burns' knee and Burns had lacerations on the top of his head and below his eye.'

Umpire Alex Wharf and his colleague Jeremy Lloyds decided to abandon the match after consulting players from both teams, including Kevin Pietersen on his last outing for Surrey.

Wharf said: 'It was a horrific situation for everyone involved - the players and the spectators who were close to the incident. We consulted with the ECB and the captains and there was never any chance of the game continuing.'
