He was born on Ashtami, the eighth day in Krishna Paksha. It is on the new moon phase of Bhadrapada. This falls usually during August or September every year. Lord Krishna is the eighth child of his parents Vasudeva and Devaki. Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated this year on August 11th and some of them even celebrate this on the next day. Dahi Handi is the popular festive celebrated on Krishna Janmashtami in Mumbai. The organizers of Dahi Handi called off all the celebrations because of the ongoing coronavirus.

People across the country make some popular Jhankis at home. It is an imaginative creation of Vrindavan village in which Krishna was born. These display the idols of Krishna and Yasodha. Along with these idols, plants, calves, cows idols are used. Families pray to Lord Krishna on this auspicious day and sing bhajans. There are 16 steps of puja that are part of the Shodashopachara puja vidhi that is performed in the midnight.
