Patient’s Fart Caused Fire In Operation Theater

In a weird incident, a female patient’s fart caused fire in hospital’s operation theater which caused burns on her legs as well as waist.

A simple operation was going in Tokyo Medical Center in Japan where a woman, who was in her 30s, undergoing surgery. As part of the operation a laser was being applied to her cervix and lower part of her uterus.

However, the women passed the intestinal gas during the operation, which after combining with laser, caught fire, and injured the woman.

The Special Investigation committee also investigated the even, which occurred on April 15 this year at the Tokyo Medical University Hospital in Shinjuku Ward. According to the committee’s investigation, woman’s fart was the main reason behind the fire and the hospital staff was doing well.

According to the external experts as well, the woman’s intestinal gas caused the fire, according to the reports. The report said, “When the patient’s intestinal gas leaked into the space of the operation room, it ignited with the irradiation of the laser, and the burning spread, eventually reaching the surgical drape and causing the fire.”

Although the woman recovered from the injury, but reports said that the fire burned her seriously and the current situation of the woman is still unknown.

A Reddit user who call himself the surgeon’s assistant said that this is common thing during the surgery and the similar incidents have been occurred previously as well.

He even explained the whole incident, “Human farts are comprised primarily of hydrogen, nitrogen, some carbon dioxide and potentially a small amount of methane and oxygen. The remaining gases in farts, which also may include a small, yet extremely potent, amount of hydrogen sulphide are generally byproducts of the fermentation and other action that occurs when microbes in the gut feast on fibre and the like in the diet of the host. The hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide and methane produced by these microbes can all be set alight, and such a typical fart will usually burn yellow or orange, with the flammable part mostly being hydrogen in this case.”
