A paanwala [betel leaf seller] in Harayana received a shock from the electricity department as he was asked to pay a bill of Rs 132 crores. Rajesh, a small timer paanwala runs a shop in Gohana town in Sonipat district, got electricity bill of Rs. 132.29 crore for the month of October which not only shocked him but he was left with no clue where did he use so much of electricity.
His shop has just one light and a small table fan and the bill he generally generates every month is more or less Rs 1,000. He said, he will be visiting the electricity department to re-check whether the bill is to him or did the officials quote it wrongly. “I am a simple man with a small shop on rent. I use only a light bulb and a fan. My electricity bill is generally less than Rs. 1,000. This bill is an absolute shocker,” said Rajesh upon seeing the huge amounted bill.
The bill was issued by the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam and earlier such reports were claimed. In 2007, a consumer was slapped with Rs 234 crores power bill for his two bedroom apartment.
