Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan Resigns:- Tamilisai Soundararajan, the Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant-Governor of Puducherry, has stepped down from both positions today. According to sources, she is expected to run for the Lok Sabha election in 2024. Ms Soundararajan, who previously led the Bharatiya Janata Party's Tamil Nadu unit, took office as Telangana's Governor in November 2019 and later assumed the additional responsibility of Lieutenant-Governor of Puducherry in February 2021. It is speculated that she might contest for the lone Lok Sabha seat in Puducherry, currently held by the Congress. The BJP believes that she has a strong connection with the people of Puducherry. There are also rumors that she could be fielded from one of the three seats in Tamil Nadu, including the Thoothukudi seat currently held by Kanimozhi of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
In the past, Ms Soundararajan has contested elections from various seats but has not been successful. She ran for the same Thoothukudi seat in the 2019 election and lost. In 2009, she contested the Chennai (North) seat but was defeated by TKS Elangovan of the DMK. She has also contested in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections three times, from Radhapuram in 2006, Velachery in 2011, and Virugampakkam in 2016.
Before the Lok Sabha election, which will be conducted in seven phases starting from April 19, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been actively engaged in the southern region of India, where the party has faced challenges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already visited Tamil Nadu five times this year, as the BJP lacks a significant alliance partner in the state.
