A family in Gaza (a pene-exclave region of Palestine on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea) had bought the lions as cubs from a local zoo and decided to keep them as their pets in their home in the crowded Rafah refugee camp.

But their intention was denied by the Israel and Egypt, who severely restricted their travel in and out of Gaza since Hamas seized the territory in 2007.
