Indians' Suicide Rate 371 Per Day, 15 Per Hour

135445 Indians committed suicide in 2012.  As per the study of National Crime Records Bureau, 11.2 cases of suicides were registered for every one lakh of population.  At an average, 15 persons committed suicide every hour and 371 every day.  Out of 371 suicides per day, 242 male and 129 female suicides were recorded.

Further breakup of the statistics show that 50062 persons committed suicide by hanging, 19445 by consuming poison and 11,438 died of self immolation, 4259 jumped in front of speeding vehicles like trains mostly.

Tamilnadu tops in suicide cases with 16927 followed by Maharashtra with 16112 cases.  Andhra Pradesh recorded 14328 suicide cases.  Among the cities also Tamilnadu’s capital Chennai stands first with 2183 cases of committing suicide.

The study also further reveals that out of 371 suicides per day, 84 are because of family problems.

Male committed suicides because of social and economic problems where as female are of emotional.

70.3% of the suicides account for the married people.  Suicides committed by house wives are 1/6th and 50% of them are from the Southern States of India.

Out of the people committed suicide by jumping in front of the speeding trains are 1101 in Andhra Pradesh which tops in that category.

A study of the above by a group of psychiatrists and other experts of that line will certainly give a clue for the unrest that is causing people to commit suicides and a remedial action can be taken by the Government to harness it.
